Where are the Sutures?

  1. the first suture is placed above the ear canal at the front of the ear closest to the eye.
  2. the second suture is placed at what will be the bottom of the ear to pull the skin together. this suture is also used to reach in toward the ear canal to grasp the cartilage. this stitch is tied all together at the base of the ear. then this same continuous stitch is run up the edge of the ear. at the top of the ear this stitch is not tied. it will be anchored under the tape when the cap is applied. if the ears are glued over the head, the suture will be glued, too.
  3. the third suture is just pulling the skin together below the second suture. this stitch is onl y present if needed.
  4. at the base of the ear, there are usually 3-4 staples present.                    staples
